Frequently Asked Questions
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition where a person experiences unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and feels compelled to perform certain actions or rituals (compulsions) to reduce distress or prevent something bad from happening. These thoughts and behaviours can become time-consuming, distressing, and interfere with daily life.
OCD symptoms can include:
- Fear of contamination or germs
- Repeated checking (locks, appliances, safety)
- Intrusive violent, sexual, or religious thoughts
- Excessive need for symmetry or exactness
- Counting, tapping, or repeating rituals
- Mental compulsions (e.g. praying, reviewing conversations)
Even if these seem irrational, they can cause significant distress.
No. That’s a common myth. OCD is not a personality trait—it’s a clinical condition involving anxiety and compulsive behaviours, often unrelated to cleaning or organizing. Many people with OCD have distressing, intrusive thoughts that have nothing to do with order or hygiene.
The gold standard treatment for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—a type of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). ERP helps you gradually face triggering thoughts or situations without engaging in compulsions, so your brain can learn there’s nothing to fear.
We also use:
- Cognitive Therapy to reframe beliefs around obsessions
- Mindfulness to manage anxiety and uncertainty
- Trauma-informed approaches if OCD is linked to past experiences
No. Therapy is a gradual, supportive process. With ERP, you’ll start small, building confidence with your therapist’s guidance. You’ll never be pushed into anything you’re not ready for. The goal is to reduce your reliance on compulsions over time, not overwhelm you.
